of Imaging Systems Technology received an Air Force SBIR Phase I grant award of $150,000 for a project
entitled Transient Electromagnetic Simulator for EMP Survivability Analysis of Packaged Electronic Systems.
Ashkan Aryaei won the ASME/IMECE Student Travel Award and will be traveling to the
2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress Exposition (IMECE) in San Diego,
California in November to present his poster “Methods to estimate elasticity of live cells by atomic force microscopy.”

Tom Burden, a Mechanical Engineering Technology student and his team members take 1st place in the Startup Weekend Toledo competition.
The Grypshon team of Tom Burden, Patricia Law and Kathy Worthy won the startup competition with the only physical product among the seven finalists.
The team developed a proposed business around friction mats designed for use in the maintenance of military and commercial aircraft.
The idea was the brainchild of Burden, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, who works on jet aircraft at the 180th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard base at Toledo Express Airport.
The Premier Student Chapter award recognizes outstanding EWB-USA Student Chapter who strives to meet the ideals of a successful EWB-USA chapter. These ideals include excellence in organization, fundraising and public relations, engagement in mentor/mentee relationship, and chapter and regional participation. We were awarded this honor for the Great Lake Region, which includes student chapters in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and West Virginia. EWB-UTOLEDO has gone through a chapter restructuring process this while continuing to work on their bridge project in Los Sanchez, Honduras and starting an assessment of a potential water project with the community of La Barranca, Honduras. Katie Burns, Corporate Sponsorship Chairperson, was selected to share her grant writing and corporate sponsorship experiences in a presentation at the conference. EWB-UTOLEDO has expanded as a chapter this year as is honored to be recognized for their growth and perseverance as they have been through multiple setbacks this year, but have always found a way to learn and grow.
MS thesis of UT graduate student Nikhil Gudi entitled “A Simulation Platform to Demonstrate Active Demand-Side Management by Incorporating Heuristic Optimization for Home Energy Management” was downloaded 1042 times from OhioLink to date. Ms. Maryam Nabiyouni, a doctoral candidate of the Department of Bioengineering was recently informed of an award of merit selected by the Orthopedic Biomaterials Special Interest Group for her poster presented in the 2013 annual meeting of the Society for Biomaterials held in Boston.
Congchen "Charles" Cai , Yadi "Wendy" Wen, Kevin Weirauch Dane Theisen, and Chris Volny placed 3rd in the startup pitch judging at the conclusion of Toledo Startup Weekend 2013 with our pitch for the product CloudControl. Zachary Kraner, co-founder and designer for Intrinsic, help design their logo.
Toledo Startup Weekend
